Project Brief:
Angle House was conceived as a contemporary coastal home shaped as much by environmental performance as by architectural intent. Set on a sloping site, the brief called for a measured, efficient dwelling that could manage level changes, protect privacy from neighbouring properties, and optimise energy efficiency. The client placed particular emphasis on thermal performance, arriving at the first meeting with a hand-made cardboard model that explored potential solar access, shading, and form, as a starting point for discussion. Alongside this, the brief sought a modern yet grounded home with durable, low-maintenance materials and a strong relationship to outdoor living.

The design responds through a series of subtle angular shifts in plan and roof form, informed by both the sloped site and solar orientation. These angled elements are used to control sunlight, limit heat gain, and reduce overlooking, while also breaking down the building mass and shaping a deliberate arrival sequence. Changes in level are absorbed into the architecture through stepped floor plates and outdoor decks, allowing the home to sit comfortably within the site while reinforcing a natural flow between internal and external spaces.

A restrained palette of timber cladding, rendered masonry, and lightweight horizontal cladding supports both durability and thermal performance, while reinforcing the clarity of the architectural form. Living spaces open to sheltered outdoor areas that function as true extensions of the interior, encouraging year-round use without compromising comfort. The resulting home demonstrates how careful attention to orientation, geometry, and materiality can deliver a highly efficient, light-filled dwelling with a strong sense of architectural purpose and place.
