BALLIANG addition
|
Location:
SOUTH GEELONG Site Area / House: 462m² / 210m² Year: 2017 Builder: OWNER Project Brief The goal of the brief for Balliang Addition was to transform the rear of an existing South Geelong weatherboard home through a carefully scaled extension that prioritised light, spatial generosity, and a strong indoor–outdoor connection. The design responds by introducing a contemporary architectural language while remaining grounded in the material and urban character of the site. The addition is organised around a new open-plan living, kitchen, and dining zone, defined by a gabled roof form and expansive northern glazing that draws daylight deep into the interior. High-level windows and skylights reinforce this sense of volume and openness, while maintaining privacy from neighbouring properties. A sequence of large sliding and folding doors enables the living spaces to extend seamlessly onto the rear deck, creating a flexible environment well suited to both everyday family life and entertaining. Material selection plays a key role in bridging old and new. Exposed brickwork, timber flooring, and restrained black joinery are paired with standing-seam metal cladding and crisp white interiors to create contrast without visual noise. Internally, the planning allows for moments of retreat alongside the main living areas, including a light-filled bathroom that opens to a private garden courtyard, reinforcing the project’s emphasis on comfort, clarity, and connection to landscape. |
